When we started producing drum and bass, finding inspiration was never the hard part — it was shaping those ideas into something polished, something complete.

We’ve had plenty of sessions that ended with a folder full of promising, but unfinished, projects.

Over the years, we’ve come to value tools that help me stay in the flow without adding complexity or cost. The free plugins in this list have been genuinely useful — not just for sketching ideas, but for bringing them across the finish line. If you’re looking to refine your sound without spending a penny, these are well worth exploring.

Valhalla Supermassive

1. Valhalla Supermassive – Lush Reverb & Delay

If you don’t already have this in your arsenal, grab it now. Supermassive is our go-to for those vast, echo-laced intros and spacey textures that really lift a track. It’s versatile, from tight mod delays to galaxy-sized reverb swells.

Super handy for keeping your track consistent too. Instead of reaching for a new sample, try throwing this on some pre existing sounds in your track and resampling it. You may find you can fill out the arrangement and bind the track together more cohesively withis this method.

4. Voxengo SPAN – Spectral Analyser

Proper Swiss Army Knife plugin here.

If you’re serious about mixing drum and bass — where tight sub-bass and crisp highs are essential — a trustworthy spectrum analyzer is a must. SPAN by Voxengo is one of those tools I’ve used on almost every project. It gives you real-time frequency data, peak hold, RMS metering, stereo imaging, and more — all wrapped in a customizable, resizable interface.

Whether you’re comparing your low end to reference tracks or checking for masking between elements, SPAN helps you make informed decisions. It’s not flashy, but it’s ridiculously useful.

This is used in every single one of our projects and is on our new project templates too – an absolute essential!
